GPU Accelerated Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Shallow Water Equations
We discuss the development, verification, and performance of a GPU
accelerated discontinuous Galerkin method for the solutions of two dimensional
nonlinear shallow water equations. The shallow water equations are hyperbolic
partial differential equations and are widely used in the simulation of tsunami
wave propagations. Our algorithms are tailored to take advantage of the single
instruction multiple data (SIMD) architecture of graphic processing units. The
time integration is accelerated by local time stepping based on a multi-rate
Adams-Bashforth scheme. A total variational bounded limiter is adopted for
nonlinear stability of the numerical scheme. This limiter is coupled with a
mass and momentum conserving positivity preserving limiter for the special
treatment of a dry or partially wet element in the triangulation. Accuracy,
robustness and performance are demonstrated with the aid of test cases. We
compare the performance of the kernels expressed in a portable threading
language OCCA, when cross compiled with OpenCL, CUDA, and OpenMP at runtime.Comment: 26 pages, 51 figure
Quantum Mechanical Corrections to the Schwarzschild Black Hole Metric
Motivated by quantum mechanical corrections to the Newtonian potential, which
can be translated into an -correction to the component of the
Schwarzschild metric, we construct a quantum mechanically corrected metric
assuming . We show how the Bekenstein black hole entropy
receives its logarithmic contribution provided the quantum mechanical
corrections to the metric are negative. In this case the standard horizon at
the Schwarzschild radius increases by small terms proportional to
and a remnant of the order of Planck mass emerges. We contrast these results
with a positive correction to the metric which, apart from a corrected
Schwarzschild horizon, leads to a new purely quantum mechanical horizon.Comment: 14 pages Latex, enlarged version as compared to the published on
Rosenblatt distribution subordinated to gaussian random fields with long-range dependence
The Karhunen-Lo\`eve expansion and the Fredholm determinant formula are used
to derive an asymptotic Rosenblatt-type distribution of a sequence of integrals
of quadratic functions of Gaussian stationary random fields on R^d displaying
long-range dependence. This distribution reduces to the usual Rosenblatt
distribution when d=1. Several properties of this new distribution are
obtained. Specifically, its series representation in terms of independent
chi-squared random variables is given, the asymptotic behavior of the
eigenvalues, its L\`evy-Khintchine representation, as well as its membership to
the Thorin subclass of self-decomposable distributions. The existence and

The energy spectrum observed by the AGASA experiment and the spatial distribution of the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays
Seven and a half years of continuous monitoring of giant air showers
triggered by ultra high-energy cosmic rays have been recently summarized by the
AGASA collaboration. The resulting energy spectrum indicates clearly that the
cosmic ray spectrum extends well beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK)
cut-off at eV. Furthermore, despite the small number
statistics involved, some structure in the spectrum may be emerging. Using
numerical simulations, it is demonstrated in the present work that these
features are consistent with a spatial distribution of sources that follows the
distribution of luminous matter in the local Universe. Therefore, from this
point of view, there is no need for a second high-energy component of cosmic

Spin superfluidity and spin-orbit gauge symmetry fixing
The Hamiltonian describing 2D electron gas, in a spin-orbit active medium,
can be cast into a consistent non-Abelian gauge field theory leading to a
proper definition of the spin current. The generally advocated gauge symmetric
version of the theory results in current densities that are gauge covariant, a
fact that poses severe concerns on their physical nature. We show that in fact
the problem demands gauge fixing, leaving no room to ambiguity in the
definition of physical spin currents. Gauge fixing also allows for polarized
edge excitations not present in the gauge symmetric case. The scenario here is
analogous to that of superconductivity gauge theory. We develop a variational
formulation that accounts for the constraints between U(1) physical fields and
SU(2) gauge fields and show that gauge fixing renders a physical matter and
radiation currents and derive the particular consequences for the Rashba SO

From sensorimotor dependencies to perceptual practices: making enactivism social
Proponents of enactivism should be interested in exploring what notion of action best captures the type of action-perception link that the view proposes, such that it covers all the aspects in which our doings constitute and are constituted by our perceiving. This article proposes and defends the thesis that the notion of sensorimotor dependencies is insufficient to account for the reality of human perception, and that the central enactive notion should be that of perceptual practices. Sensorimotor enactivism is insufficient because it has no traction on socially dependent perceptions, which are essential to the role and significance of perception in our lives. Since the social dimension is a central desideratum in a theory of human perception, enactivism needs a notion that accounts for such an aspect. This article sketches the main features of the Wittgenstein-inspired notion of perceptual practices as the central notion to understand perception. Perception, I claim, is properly understood as woven into a type of social practices that includes food, dance, dress, music, etc. More specifically, perceptual practices are the enactment of culturally structured, normatively rich techniques of commerce of meaningful multi- and inter-modal perceptible material. I argue that perceptual practices explain three central features of socially dependent perception: attentional focus, aspects’ saliency, and modal-specific harmony-like relations
An Evolutionary Algorithm to Generate Real Urban Traffic Flows
In this article we present a strategy based on an evolutionary algorithm to calculate the real vehicle ows in cities according to data from sensors placed in the streets. We have worked with a map imported from OpenStreetMap into the SUMO traffic simulator so that the resulting scenarios can be used to perform different optimizations with the confidence of being able to work with a traffic distribution close to reality. We have compared the results of our algorithm to other competitors and achieved results that replicate the real traffic distribution with a precision higher than 90%.Universidad de Málaga. Open cluster candidates in the VVVX area: VVVX CL 076 and CL 077
We are reporting some basic parameters of two newly discovered clusters, VVVX CL 076 and CL 077, recently discovered in the galactic disk area covered by the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea eXtended (VVVX) ESO Public Survey.
